Even Newer FunSpot

This is why the city threw our bike park westward about 100 yards

"SANTA CRUZ -- Almost 17 years after President George H.W. Bush marked the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary off-limits to oil drilling, shark chumming and Jet Skis, visitors to Surf City will soon be able to see the wonders that the national sanctuary was created to protect.

Exactly $3 million in federal funding came through Thursday to help build the $16 million Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center on the former "Fun Spot" skateboard and bicycle park across from Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf.

Supporters say that money, coupled with about $4.6 million in federal dollars expected this September, is the final amount needed to begin construction. Crews could break ground as soon as January. The visitors center is expected to draw about 350,000 people annually."

The attraction will feature an intertidal touch pool; a floor-to-ceiling model of a kelp forest, complete with a scuba diver; a theater projecting footage of deep sea critters found in the bay's underwater canyon; and other exhibits.

Good times had on that peace of land, but I think the marine lab will be awesome
